In the discussions of the incredible albums from the Summer of Love and 1967, such as Sgt peppers, Are You Experienced?, Surrealistic Pillow and the self titled debuts from The Doors and The Grateful Dead, one disc that is often overlooked is the debut effort from Pink Floyd. The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn was recorded from February to May 1967, and released during the Summer Of Love, on August 5.  While the album went to #6 in the UK, it was barely noticeable in the US, reaching on #131.  In recent years, the album has been hailed as a psychedelic masterpiece. directly influenced by LSD trips taken by then front man Syd Barrret.. Rolling Stone calling the album "the golden achievement of Syd Barrett" and ranked it at #347 on the magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums ever.  Barret would be gone from Pink Floyd by 1968, unable to function due to the effects of his consumption of psychedelic drugs and Pink Floyd would move toward progressive rock, but for a brief moment in the Summer Of Love, they were part of the psychedelic 60s.

Today's post jumps ahead 8 years to Pink Floyd's 1975 North American tour, which ran from April 8 to June 28, The tour was unique in several respects.  First, while the shows were often referred to as the Wish You Were Here tour, the album by that name would not be released until September of that year. The band did play both the Shine on You Crazy Diamond suite (all 9 parts) and Have A Cigar from that soon to be released disc, but they had not yet completed either the title track or Welcome To The Machine. Second, the opening 2 songs of each concert, Raving and Drooling and You've Got To Be Crazy, were actually early versions of Sheep and Dogs, two tunes which would not appear in final form until the release of their 1977 album, Animals. Finally, for the last part of the show, Pink Floyd played the entire Dark Side of The Moon album, the last time the band would do so with Roger Waters. .  This HQ audience recording (the notes that accompany it rate the sound as outstanding) captures Pink Floyd near the end of the tour, on June 18, 1975, 42 years ago today, in Boston.
