In late 1966, the Jefferson Airplane recruited Grace Slick, and the rest, as they say, was history. Over the course of the next 6 months, the Airplane took center stage as one of the leading bands of the new psychedelic rock movement that emerged from San Francisco. Their breakthrough album, Surrealistic Pillow, produced by the Dead's Jerry Garcia, and released in February 1967, spawned two huge hits, Somebody To Love and White Rabbit. The Airplane played at the Human Be-In in January and then at the Monterrey Pop Festival in June, helping inaugurate the Summer of Love, in which thousands of young people converged on the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco. two years later, the Airplane continued to be a voice of the counter culture. In April 1969, Jefferson Airplane went into the studio to begin work on their 6th album, Volunteers, which would become the band’s most overtly political statement against the war in Viet Nam. In addition, the group further expressed their dissatisfaction with the establishment by peppering various songs on the album with a host of profanities, including the phrase “up against the wall, mother f***ers”, made popular at the time by the radical group the Black Panthers. The combination of anti war messages and obscene lyrics delayed the release of the Volunteers until November 1969 as the Airplane had to overcome numerous objections from their record company. All the controversy surrounding the album didn’t prevent it from climbing the charts, as it went to #13, making it the band’s 4th top twenty disc. Even while they fought to get Volunteers released, the Airplane began playing material from the album in their live performances. For example, this concert in their hometown of San Francisco on June 13, 1969, 4 dozen years s ago today, included Eskimo Blue Day, Good Sheppard, and the title track from the disk.
