Grateful Dead -1974-06-08 - Oakland CA (SBD)

For the 1970s portion of our Grateful Dead posts this month, I was going to leap a decade ahead from 1967 to 1977, which just might be the most magical year in the band's history, but the only unreleased show from June of that year is an audience recording from June 4 in Los Angeles. The three show run at Winterland that month has been officially released as a box set.  So, I decided to go with my 2nd favorite year from the 1970s, namely 1974. Of course, the Grateful Dead of 1974 was a very  different band from the one that played Monterrey Pop in 1967. Drummer Micky Hart had left the band (temporarily - he would return late in 1974) and founding member and keyboardist Ron “Pigpen” McKernan had passed away at age 27 in 1973. Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux had joined the group, and the band's sound had taken on a jazzier feel, though psychedelic improvisation remained at its heart and soul. The 1974 concerts featured the famed Wall of Sound, the mammoth speaker system that could unleash a total of 26,400 watts of audio power. Four tractor trailers and 21 crew members were required to haul and set up the 75-ton Wall. This soundboard captures the band and the Wall on June 8, 1974, 43 years ago today, in Oakland..
