While the Summer of Love eventually became synonymous with the counter culture and San Francisco, the musical event that launched it emerged from Abbey Roads Studios in London. When the Beatles released Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on June 1, 1967,  they once again changed rock music forever.  Sgt. Pepper's was the first concept album, the first disc to include lyrics and its cover art was revolutionary. Rolling Stone magazine's Langdon Winner wrote that "The closest Western Civilization has come to unity since the Congress of Vienna in 1815 was the week the Sgt. Pepper album was released. In every city in Europe and America the radio stations played it ... and everyone listened ... it was the most amazing thing I've ever heard. For a brief while the irreparable fragmented consciousness of the West was unified, at least in the minds of the young."  In the UK, the disc debuted at #1 and stayed there for 22 consecutive weeks. American radio stations interrupted their regular scheduling, playing the album virtually non-stop – often from start to finish, The album stayed at #1 on the Billboard in the US for 15 weeks, from July 1 to 13 October 13, 1967. On 4 June, the Jimi Hendrix Experience opened a show at the Saville Theatre in London with their rendition of the title track, with George Harrison and Paul McCartney in attendance. McCartney described the moment: "The curtains flew back and Hendrix came walking forward playing 'Sgt. Pepper'. It's a pretty major compliment in anyone's book. I put that down as one of the great honours of my career."  And to think, just 4 months earlier, the British press wondered "Has the Bubble Burst? when the double A side single of  Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" became the first Beatles single in 4 years not to hit #1 on the UK charts.To his dying day, George Martin claimed that releasing the 2 tunes early, and then not including them on the Sgt Peppers album "was the biggest mistake of my professional life."  Can you imagine that  a disc that many sources cites as the best album ever earned that distinction despite missing two of the Beatles greatest tunes?  In any event, this soundboard recording captures The Beatles 3 years earlier, when Beatlemania was first running wild, in Australia on June 12, 1964, 54 years ago today. They were without Ringo for this show, however, as he was hospitalized in London with tonsillitis, so Jimmy Nichol filled in on drums.  We'll bring you another show from the Beatles from this tour in a few ds, with Ringo back behind the drum kit so you get to hear the entire Fab Four!
