While by 1967, The Who had already had 2 top 5 albums in the UK, they had yet to have much commercial or critical success in the US. That all changed ight as tehe Summer Of Love dawned, when the band toured North America for the first time. After playing a few US dates in April, they returned for their first full fledged tour of in June. That run included an appearance at Monterrey Pop on June 18, the closing night of the festival, along with Janis Joplin, Buffalo Springfield, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix and the Mamas and Papas. Their set stunned the "Love Crowd" at Monterrey as at the end of their frenetic performance of "My Generation", guitarist Pete Townshend smashed his guitar, smoke bombs exploded behind the amps, and drummer Keith Moon kicked over his drum kit as the band exited the stage. The Who had arrived in America. By year end, the band had their first US top 10 sing;le, when I Can See For Miles went to #9 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures the band 9 years later, on June 12, 1976, 51 years ago today.
