In November 1966, the Jimi Hendrix Expereince performed at the Bag O'Nails nightclub in London, with Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Brian Jones, and Mick Jagger in attendance. The reaction was stunned disbelief - they had never seen or heard anyone like Jimi. McCartney was so impressed that when asked for recommendation for acts to play at Monterey Pop, he insisted on Hendrix. Jimi did not disappoint, delivering a performance for the ages, including lighting his guitar on fire! Just a few weeks later, his debut album, Are You Experienced was released in the US, climbing to #5 on the Billboard charts, The disc stayed on the charts chart for 106 weeks, 27 of those in the Top 40. Critics also raved about the album with author Chris Smith, calling the release "a landmark in a summer of landmark albums", Robert Christgau wrote that the disc was "a roiling sea of guitar that would change how a generation of fans heard music and conceived their on blown minds." Of course, as could only happen in the music industry, as a result of Jimi's success at Monterey Pop, he was asked to tour that summer with THE MONKEES as their opening act! Fans of The Monkees hated Jimi, who left the tour after 6 shows. Years later, it was revealed that the whole tour had been engineered to gain more publicity for Jimi and The Experience! In any event, in honor of Jimi's impact on the Summer Of Love, we'll bring you two posts from his appearance at the the Newport Pop Festival in Northridge CA in June 1969, just about 2 months prior to Woodstock. The 150,000 who attended got to see Jimi play twice; first on Friday with The Experience (Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding) and then again on Sunday as part of an all-star jam with Buddy Miles, Lee Oskar and Eric Burden, just to name a few. Most people may already know the story behind the June 20th show. But anyway.....Jimi was supposedly hassled by someone (or a group of people) before the show. One suggestion is that The Black Panthers put a bunch of pressure on Jimi to become more militant. (Listen to Jimi during the beginning of "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" at this show.)
Also,Jimi may have been annoyed by the fact that his show was delayed a long time by scheduling problems. Around this time Jimi also felt that parts of his audience only wanted "the hit songs".
It appears that all this stuff resulted in him having a pissy attitude during the show. He kept turning his back to the crowd while playing & told them to "choke themselves" at one point.
Given his attitude,he played a decent show.
Apparently he felt so guilty about all this that he came back on the 22nd and played like a maniac!!

Just researched this show and some wonderful classic rock acts also played it: Jefferson Airplane, Eric Burdon, Paul Butterfield, Electric Flag. Any chance to find recordings of these acts?
