As the Summer of Love dawned in June 1967, David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash each were following their own path.  Crosby was with The Byrds, performing at Monterey Pop but angering fellow band mates by making political statements on stage. Stills was co-leading Buffalo Springfield with Neil Young - and usually feuding with him as well.  As mentioned earlier, thanks to one of those feuds, Neil skipped the Springfield's performance at Monterey Pop.  Crosby filled in for Neil, further angering the other members of The Byrds.  Nash was with The Hollies, trying to push their music in a new direction, as exemplified by the tune King Midas In Reverse, which other band members felt was too psychedelic and complex.  Eventually, all 3 would leave (or be asked to leave) their respective bands, only to find each other. And when Neil decided he could again co-exist with Stephen, one of rock's first super groups was formed, It only seemed fitting that the group that formed from the ashes of Monterey Pop would play one of their very earliest live shows at Woodstock. Today's post is a soundboard recording that captures CSN (we featured Neil yesterday) 2 dozen years after Monterey Pop, at the Paul Mason Winery, on June 26, 1991, 26 years ago today. If you’re as old as I am, you’ll remember Paul Masson Wines, and their slogan,“we shall sell no wine before its time.” That line was delivered in ultra serious tones by Orson Welles, who was eventually fired from that job when he admitted on talk show that he never drank Paul Masson wine. In any event, when I was watching those commercials as a kid, I never imagined that one day, Paul Mason wines would be associated with rock and roll. At some point in the late 1980s or early 1990s, as the Woodstock generation aged and its tastes matured, the Paul Masson vineyard in California began hosting rock concerts. Now known as the Mountain Winery, the venue’s annual concert series features up to 60 shows each summer.
