In August 1976, at the height of his popularity, Elton concluded the Louder Than the Concorde Tour, with 7 nights at Madison Square Garden, which at the time was a record for 1 performer. I was fortunate enough to be on the floor for August 15 show!   It was my very first concert - not a bad start, at all!  Later that year, he released Blue Moves, an album with a different sound, recorded with a brand new backing band. The disc was not as well received as his previous albums, and marked the end of an incredible 6 year run for Elton.  While Blue Moves went to #3 on the chats, it only yielded one top 10 single (Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word) and broke a run of 6 consecutive albums that had gone to the top spot. After years of grueling studio work and world tours, Elton used 1977 as a time to recuperate.  He played only 9 concerts that year, 6 of them in May 1977 at the Ranibow Theater in London.  Those were 2 man performances, with Elton on piano backed only by Ray Cooper on percussion.  This soundboard recording captures Elton on May 7, 1977, 36 years ago today, the last of the 6 nights at the Rainbow. (FYI - this show is often listed as May 13, but it is actually May 7.  The 6 shows ran from May 2 to May 7.)   This show has a very different feel and set list from the arena performances from the year before, such as the show I attended.  It's also another May 1977 post, adding further evidence in support of my argument that few months in rock history have seen such a diverse set of artists on tour simultaneously.
