During their Spring 1977 run, the Grateful Dead debuted numerous tunes from the album Terrapin Station, which had been recorded in late 1976 and would be released in July 1977. While the album did not achieve much critical or commercial success, the band seemed inspired by the new material. Tunes like Estimated Prophet, Samson & Delilah and the title track quickly became staples in the band's set list. This show from St. Louis on May 15, 1977, 36 years ago today, is noteworthy for the first pairing of Estimated Prophet flowing seamlessly into Eyes of The World, a combination which would become a staple of the band's concerts for years to come. The show also features the debut of another tune from the Terrapin Station album, Passenger, a song penned by Phil Lesh. In addition, the Dead debuted Iko Iko at this show, which while not included on Terrapin Station, reflects the band's focus on introducing new material into their sets at this time. Terrapin was a mixed bag, but I did love it when it came out, despite the thin, timid, disco-y version of "Dancin' In the Street" that almost sank Side 1 (it's been given a punchier remix in subsequent reissues, with the saxes and bass mixed more upfront, but the original vinyl mix was pretty awful). But even then, I loved the Terrapin suite, the way it meandered in and out of various sections and moods, its orchestration and percussion duel; and of course, Estimated, Passenger and yes, Sunrise, were all fine new songs.
This was also the first album to capture the power and oomph of the Kreutzman/Hart drum sound that we all knew from the concert stage, which we can actually thank Keith Olsen for, I guess.
I also loved its "companion" album from a few months later, Garcia's Cats Under the Stars, which had a similarly lush sound, and was similarly overlooked.
