Not only were legends of rock on tour in 1977, but so were virtual unknowns who one one day reach that legendary status. While Tom Petty had released his first album in November 1976, it received little or no attention in the US. In fact it didn't chart until 1978, hitting #55 on the Billboard Top 200. So when the band played the Pinkpop festival in the Netherlands on May 30, 1977, 36 years ago today, they were hardly headliners. In fact their set, as captured in this FM broadcast, was just 4 songs. But two of those - American Girl and Breakdown - would go on to become classics and were evidence of the huge star he would become.

Thank you for this nice concert. I would never have thought to be listening again to that concert I heard back in 1977 as a teenager discovering rock music at low volume with my ear against the loudspeaker, as mum didn't want me to increase the volume of the radio broadcast... ;)
Now I will be able to listen to it again at comfortable volume !!
