A listen to night number 2 in Landover on May 26, 1977, 3 dozen years ago today, helps reveal why even die hard Led Zep fans have mixed emotions about this final US tour. On the one hand, the playing in many cases is superb, with the new 2 tunes from Presence, Nobody's Fault But Mine and Achilles Last Stand, adding a new dimension to the set list. On the other hand, the drum solo - Moby Dick - lasted well over 30 minutes, and while few were as good behind the kit as Bonzo, the length of that segment tended to slow the band's on stage momentum. Plant even nicknamed the drum solo Over The Top in recognition that the band might have taken it just a bit too far. But excess was the theme of the times and the tour (though the punk rock movement we've highlighted this month would soon rebel against that), as evidenced by the large scale stadium shows, the private jet the band chartered, the the violence which erupted at numerous concerts and the incredible amount of drugs available to the and and its entourage (more on all of that in our upcoming posts). I've had this show for about a year or two. If anyone is on-the-fence about getting it,let me assure you: It's worth it. Great sound. (Possibly the best sound of any 1977 Zep show.) Also a very fine performance which includes "a half-hour with John Bonham" a.k.a "Moby Dick".

36:07 of Moby Dick?? WTF??
I had friends who saw Led Zep in June 1977 at Madison Square Garden who described the show as a drum solo with some music around it. Guess this helps explain that description. That said, the playing on the other songs is outstanding, as is the sound quality of the bootleg.
With Moby Dick deleted, it makes for an awesome concert. I've never heard No Quarter played so "up-tempo" like on this one.
