As I've said throughout this month, it is amazing the breadth of artists that were on tour in May 1977, and this post further reinforces that point. It had been 7 years since Reed left the Velvet Underground, a period which had been a whirlwind of highs and lows. His debut solo album in 1972 was basically ignored by both fans and critics.  His follow up, Transformer, co-produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson, and which included the hit single, Walk on The Wild Side, was a major commercial and critical success. Reed continued that pattern of alternating successful and disappointing albums throughout the 1970s.  In fact, this concert catches him right in the middle of one of those cycles, as his 1976 disc, Rock and Roll Heart, had little success, while the soon to be released Street Hassle would wow critics and fans alike.  Reed played songs from both those discs at the Bottom Line in New York on May 11, 1977, 3 dozen years ago today, as well as material from Transformer and Berlin. Moreover, 4 of the first 5 songs to open the show are Velvet Underground tunes, which he then follows with Walk on The Wild Side.  Well worth the download of the soundboard recording just to hear Reed perform those classics.
