As we've mentioned on many occasions here at So Many Roads, the mid 1970s were a time of dramatic change in the rock world. As many of the mainstays of the 60s stepped out of the limelight, rock music moved in a variety of directions. For example, Bruce Springsteen brought the Jersey rock scene to national prominence. Artists such as Peter Frampton, Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles created a highly polished sound that would come to be known as album oriented rock. Bands such as Yes, ELP and Genesis became leaders of the progressive rock movement, added layers of instrumentation and technology to their music. Amidst all of this change, The Ramones emerged, adding, their own spin to the all the other transformations in the rock world. heir hard driving, straight ahead, stripped down, anti-establishment, incessant form of rock, with no song longer than 2 ½ minutes, coupled with the black leather jackets, t-shirt and jean wardrobe, combined to usher in a new era of rock music, called Punk. In 1974, The Ramones played 74 shows at CBGBs, the now legendary and defunct rock club in New York’s Bowery district! They signed their first recording contract in 1975, and released their self titled debut album in 1976 to rave critical reviews. In spring 1977, The Ramones traveled across the pond, playing at Bararella’s in Birmingham on May 24, 1977, 36 years ago today.
