On May 3, 1977, Elvis concluded a brief tour of the Midwest with this show in Saginaw, 36 years ago today. (We featured some earlier shows from this tour last month – go here for those). For the King, there would be another run of shows later that month, then a brief tour in mid-June, which would include his final show on June 26, 1977 in Indianapolis. On August 16, 1977, his heart would stop, the result of an overdose of prescription drugs, the very drugs he had been abusing for the last several years of his life. Ironically, at one point during this performance in Saginaw, Elvis told the crowd that he was "here, healthy, happy and singing". After the show, he flew home to Memphis, and spent 2 weeks in Graceland, rarely leaving the 2nd floor of his mansion. With the benefit of hindsight, it’s clear the end was near.
