According to Rolling Stone magazine, Led Zeppelin's manager Peter Grant envisioned the band's 1977 North American tour as an opportunity to reassert the group's position as the dominant band of the decade.  With advance sales of 1.3 million tickets for 51 scheduled dates, the most for any tour in the band's history, Led Zeppelin most certainly seemed to be on the way to fulfilling that vision.  The tour, however, would be plagued by troubles right from the outset.  The opening show, originally scheduled for February 27 in Dallas, had to be delayed for more than a month because Robert Plant contracted laryngitis.  The band could not rehearse during that period because all their instruments has been sent overseas in advance of the tour's launch. As such some of the early shows in the tour featured the band at less than their best.  Fortunately, by the time that reach Landover, MD for a 4 night stand (only the runs in New York and Los Angeles of 6 nights each would be longer), much of the rustiness was gone.  Other issues, however, would emerge as the tour continued, as we'll describe in the upcoming posts.  Download this soundboard bow from the first night in Landover on May 26, 1977, 36 years ago today, then come back over tomorrow and on May 28 and May 30 for the rest of the shows from that city.
