As mentioned in numerous posts on So Many Roads, between 1989 and 1991, the band played some of their finest performances not just since Jerry Garcia recovered from his diabetic coma in 1987, but also since the band’s peak in the 1970s. As a result, we’ll bring you 3 shows from July 1989, starting with this soundboard recording from Giants Stadium on July 9, 1989, 26 years ago today. 1989 in Grateful Dead History
- The Dead release the studio album, Built To Last. As is custom at that time, the band also records music videos for several songs from the album, including Foolish Heart, Just A Little Light, We Can Run and the title track.
- The band also releases the live album, Dylan & The Dead, which, unfortunately, hardly does justice to the historic 1987 shows where the Dead served as Dylan’s backing band.
- Forbes lists Grateful Dead as 3rd in concert grosses behind the Rolling Stones and The Who.
- On October 8 & 9, the band plays 2 shows in Hampton, VA billed as “Formerly The Warlocks”. They used the alias as the city government was opposed to booking future Grateful Dead shows deeming the crowds that accompanied the band’s shows to be a bit of a public nuisance. For these shows, The Dead reached back into their song catalog and played some tunes that hadn't been in the set list for nearly 2 decades, including Attics of My Life, We Bid You Goodnight and Death Don’t Have No Mercy. The two shows have been officially released
- A week after the Hampton shows, the Dead played another masterpiece for Bob Weir’s 42nd birthday, on October 16, 1989 ( I was there), another show which has been officially released as an album entitled, Nightfall of Diamonds. \
- In addition to the October 8, 9 & 16 shows detailed above, the following 1989 concerts have been officially released: April 2, April 3, July 4 and July 7.
- In addition, Jerry Garcia’s fall 1989 tour spawned the official release of 4 shows; September 1,2, 5 & 6.

Giants Stadium let the Dead do general admission shows long after it was common - this was one of'em. I was up front for the entire show (I usually avoided doing that like the plague!) and it was a lot of fun! One of those shows where the first set outshines the second (with China-Rider being the exception, of course). It was a hot, sticky summer day ... perfect Dead weather!
