It was 20 years ago today, July 9, 1995, that the Grateful Dead played their final show, as captured in this soundboard recording. The spring/summer run had been marred by one disaster after another, earning the nickname the “Tour From Hell” (see below for more details). The final tragedy occurred when Jerry Garcia passed away at the way too young age of 53 on August 9, 1995. “Fare thee well, fare thee, we love you more than words can tell.”
1995 in Grateful Dead History
- The band’s official website, Dead.net, goes on line.
- Volumes 2 and 3 of the Dick’s Picks series are released, featuring concerts from October 31, 1971 and May 22, 1977, respectively.
- The band also releases the live disc Hundred Year Hall, featuring a show from the Europe 72 tour which took place in Frankfurt on April 26, 1972
- The Tour From Hell begins on June 15. Two fans fall from the upper deck at the June 24 show, lightning strikes 3 fans before the June 25 show, the band is forced to cancel their July 3 show due to damage done to the venue the previous night and 108 fans are injured when a structure collapses during the July 6 concert.
- The band plays their final show on July 9.
- Jerry Garcia passes away on August 9.
- A celebration of Garcia’s life is held in Golden Gate Park on August 13. Over 25,000 people attend.
- The band officially retires the name Grateful Dead in December. The surviving members will regroup and perform in various configurations over the next 2 decades, using names such as The Other Ones, The Dead, and Furthur, but never again as The Grateful Dead.
- No live shows have been released yet from 1995 but one song, from their final show was included on their 1999 6 CD retrospective. It’s the tune that gave the name to both that set and this blog - So Many Roads.

How I love this site.
I just want to mention one thing that the intrepid downloader may want to know about this show: it is not a very good show! Unless you want to literally hear Jerry not being able to muster up any energy, sometimes not even PLAYING....it's a sad listen.
However, the last song, "Box Of Rain" is spine-tingling. Phil Lesh has said - and the tape totally backs it up - that he was mortified how bad the concert had been, and how he didn't want to end the tour this way, hence he launched into "Box Of Rain", making it a rare double-encore, and sings his ass off. Jerry comes alive. It's a "real" moment, and thank god Phil did that...it would have been sad to end on such a bummer of a show.
You'll always have SOME Deadhead telling you it was the greatest show ever. By all accounts from the band members themselves, contemporaneous reviews (some from people I knew who were there), and from listening to this tape: I don't think one can seriously make that pronouncement. Still...to each their own! I'll take Boston Music Hall '73! Branford night at Nassau, 1990! Harper College, 1970! (Orpheum Theatre, 1976!)
You're right - it's not a great show but it is, as Pigstreet noted in his comment, the original Fare Thee Well. And the encore is memorable, as is the So Many Roads. We still miss you, Jerry!
