Grateful Dead - 1984-07-13 - Berkeley CA (SBD)

Today, we bring you the first of 3 shows from the Grateful Dead’s 1984 run at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. The Dead played that venue 29 times, twice in the 60s and the rest between 1981 and 1989. The 8500 seat venue opened in 1905, and has been the home to everything from musical performances, to Broadway style productions to graduation ceremonies to football rallies. This soundboard recording captures the Dead on the first of 3 nights at The Greek on July 13, 1984, 31 years ago today. This one is magical as the Dead, inspired by a shooting star in the sky right before the encore, (or so the legend goes) launch into Dark Star, the only time the song was played between 1981 and 1989! Download this one, then stop back tomorrow and the next day to 2 more from the Dead at The Greek in 1984.

1984 in Grateful Dead History
  • The Deadhead Hour radio program debuts on KFOG San Francisco
  • The Tapers Section debuts on October 27, allowing concert goers to purchase special tickets from where they can tape each show.
  • After the Dead play Casey Jones at their November 2, 1984 show, they go 8 years before they again play the tune. Rumor has it that Garcia agreed to stop playing the tune, with its lyric about being “high on cocaine”, as part of a plea bargain related to one of his arrests for possession of drugs.
  • No live shows have been released from 1984.
