I was fortunate enough to attend the 3rd Dylan/Dead collaboration on July 12, 1987, 28 years ago today, at Giants Stadium in New Jersey. On a day that was blistering hot, so was the music! First, the Dead did not one, but two sets of their own tunes! Then, they joined Dylan for a 13 song tour de force, highlighting every era of Dylan’s music, followed by a perfectly paired encore of Touch of Grey and Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door. Both songs touched every Deadhead who knew how close we had come to losing Jerry Garcia when he had fallen into a diabetic coma in 1986. Two songs, two legends – the perfect ending to a perfect day. This bootleg, culled from 3 different sources -- part soundboard, part audience & part matrix -- captures the entire show from July 12, all 3 sets, every note played. With all due respect, they should have released this show instead of the tepid Dylan and The Dead CD that hardly does justice to these historic shows. Download this one and see for yourself.

Many thanks,Speedy. You,Dino,and a couple other guys' blogs are always providing me with great music in a sometimes repetitive,dull work week. It makes a big difference.
Anyway,I'm still on disc one of this show. Man,it sounds great. I've never listened to one of these matrix shows before. You sort of get the "in the crowd" feel along with the crisp sbd feel.
Thanks Jordan for the kind words. Glad you're enjoying this! I actually compiled it from 3 separate sources - a soundboard and a matrix or most of the show, and then an audience for 2 or 3 missing songs. Wanted folks to have the best possible version of an historic event!

This was my first Dead show and what a show it was! It was hotter than hell that day but the music made it bearable. Well, that and some cold ones and some liquid acid! Truly a great performance to kick off my 8 year run of Dead shows.

Anonymous has it right, that day was BROILING hot! For me, the Dead's first set was not up to par, but I chalked it up to the heat. When they came out and opened set 2 with Morning Dew, I knew they were intent on kicking it up a couple of notches and boy, did they! Because they still had Dylan's set to go, they trimmed the 2nd set a bit compared to their usual, but in the heat that actually worked to their advantage.
And Speedy, you're absolutely right, releasing this or the Oregon Dylan set would have been a huge improvement over what came out. The story goes that Garcia and Lesh produced a version of the album that was much better than the final release, but Dylan, for his own inscrutable reasons, nixed it. That first version circulates as a bootleg; it's better than the released version, but still not a feather in either artist's cap.
