Our 3rd Dead concert today is a soundboard recording from July 1, 1985, 3 decades ago today, from Columbia, MD. The band continues the strong playing that was evident in the run of 10 shows from 1985 that we brought you last month.
1985 in Grateful Dead History
- The band celebrated their 20th anniversary in 1985.
- While the band begins the year strong, their playing tails off near year end as Jerry Garcia become more and more dependent on heroin. The band has to perform an intervention.
- Dick Latvala becomes the band’s archivist. He will launch the Dick’s Picks series of live releases in 1993.
- The band’s performance on New Year’s Eve, December 31, was broadcast nationally both on radio and TV.
- The only live show released from this year is November 1, 1985 (Dick’s Picks 21) which is ironic as the band played stronger in the first half of the year than in the second.
