In 1976, the Grateful Dead made their triumphant return to live performing after a hiatus that lasted from October 1974, after their 5 farewell shows at Winterland to June 1976. Among the memorable shows from that year was a run of 6 shows in July at the Orpheum Theater in San Francisc their first shows in their home town since the 1974 Winterland concerts. This soundboard captures the opening night of that run, from July 12, 1976, 39 years ago today.

1976 in Grateful Dead History

• The Grateful Dead resume touring after a year and half long break, on June 3, 1976.
• The Dead release Steal Your Face, a double album featuring songs played at their 1975 Winterland “farewell shows. Neither the sound quality nor song selection did justice to those magnificent shows. The Dead finally made up for it in 2004, releasing a 5 CD set that was a true representation of those shows, though it still did not include any of the 5 nights it their entirety. 
• The Dead incorporate the drums > space segment into their shows for the first time, That segment, featuring Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzman followed by some improvisational electronic music, becomes a staple of the 2nd set for the rest of the band’s career.
• The band folds Grateful Dead records, the record label they had founded in 1973. Running a business simply was far more taxing an effort than the band wanted. 
• Live concerts from 1976 that have been officially released include: June 9 & 18: September 24, 25 & 28; October 9 & 10; and December 31.
