Our 2nd Dead show today, and 4th of 6 July 4 concerts, is a soundboard recording from July 4, 1986, 29 years ago today. Three days later, after a July 7 show in Washington DC, Jerry Garcia would lapse into a near fatal diabetic coma, which lasts for 5 days. When he finally recovers, he needs to re-teach himself how to play guitar!

1986 in Grateful Dead History

• The Dead’s July tour also features Bob Dylan, who is backed by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. 
• As mentioned above, Jerry lapsed into a near fatal coma on July 7. 
• Jerry returns to performing in October playing solo shows in San Francisco
• The Dead take the stage for the first time since Jerry’s illness on December 15.
• Perhaps reflecting the tough year the band had dealing with Jerry’s diabetic coma, no live performances from 1986 have been officially released.
