When the Dead took the stage in Jersey City on July 18, 1972, 43 years ago today, it was just the 3rd show they played since returning from Europe in May. That tour of course is the stuff of legends, but none of it can be posted here or anywhere since every single Europe 72 show has been officially released. Of course, amidst that success, the band would suffer a loss, as Pigpen would leave the Dead due to his failing health at the end of the tour. So, enjoy his soundboard from the summer after Europe 72 as a memory of a year filled with triumph and tragedy for the band.

1972 in Grateful Dead History

• Donna Jean Godchaux joins the band on March 25, joining her husband Keith, who had come aboard in late 1971.
• The band tours Europe from April 7 to May 26, playing 22 shows.
• The band releases a triple live album in November, entitled Europe 72, providing highlights from their run across the pond. Over the years, the band releases some full shows from that tour, culminating in 2001 with the release of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings, a 73 CD set that documents every note played at all 22 shows! 
• On June 17, Pigpen leaves the band due to his failing health. He would pass away in early 1973, starting a horrific trend of tragic deaths for The Dead’s keyboard players. 
• On August 27, the band plays a benefit concert in Venetta, Oregon to raise money for the financially imperiled Springfield Creamery, which was operated by Ken Kesey’s brother, Chuck. If any show rivals Barton Hall in 1977 for the title Best Dead Show ever, this one is it! The audio and video of the concert, entitled Sunshine Daydream, were officially released in 2013, 
• In addition to the Europe 72 run and the August 27 Venetta performance, the following live concerts from 1972 have been officially released: March 26, March 28, July 21, September 17, September 21, September 27 and November 17.
