Today, as part of our 6 show July 4th celebration, we bring you 2 Grateful Dead concerts. Our first is a soundboard recording from Austin from July 4, 1981, 34 years ago today. Stop back later today for some Grateful Dead from 1986, as well as 4 other classic shows!

1981 in Grateful Dead History

• The Dead release Reckoning and Dead Set, 2 albums which document their 1980 shows at the Warfield, The Saenger and Radio City, Reckoning features music from the acoustic sets from those shows while Dead Set features tunes from the electric sets.
• The Dead and Ken Kesey appear on The Tomorrow Show hosted by Tom Synder on May 7.
• The band visits Europe in March and then again in September and October, their first shows on that continent since 1974. 
• During their March run in Europe, they play the Rockpalast in Germany, The Who are on the same bill and Pete Townshend joins The Dead on stage. 
• The band's show at the Melk Weg in Amsterdam on October 16 has become legendary among Dead Heads. 
• The only live show from 1981 that has been officially released is May 6 (Dick’s Picks 13)
