Today, our Grateful Dead tribute takes us back to 1969, a little over a month before a festival in upstate New York that would define a generation. The summer of 1969 was filled with music festivals. In fact, Atlanta hosted 2 within the span of 4 days. On July 4, the Atlanta International Pop Festival took place featuring acts such as Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Chicago and Delaney & Bonnie, just to name a few. Three days later, on July 7, the Pop festival promoters gave Atlanta’s music fans a gift - a free concert in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park featuring Chicago, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, Spirit and The Grateful Dead. This soundboard recording captures the Dead’s set from that July 7, 1969 free show, 46 years ago today. By the way, Greg and Duane Allman sit in with the Dead during Turn On Your Lovelight, just one of a host of times the two bands jammed together in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

1969 in Grateful Dead History

• The Dead play Woodstock, a historic moment but not the band;s finest live performance.
• The Dead release their 3rd studio album, Aoxomoxoa, which also become their first gold record. 
• The band also releases Live Dead, their first live album,  Rober Christgau wrote that side two of the double disc "contains the finest rock improvisation ever recorded.” 
• Much of the material from Live Dead was taken form the band’s winter run at The Fillmore West on February 27, February 28, March 1 and March 2. In 2005, the band released a 10 CD set box set of "every note played at the four Fillmore West shows.” 
• In addition to the Fillmore shows, other live concerts from 1969 that have been officially released include February 11, April 17, April 26, April 27, May 23, May 24, November 8, December 12 and December 20.
