Three of the 4 members of CSNY - David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Neil Young - have performed live with the Grateful Dead. In the early 1970,s David Crosby sat in on several occasion s with the Dead, including 8/19/1970. 9/10/1972 and 12/31/1972. His most famous appearances with The Dead, however, are from December 1971, when he, Garcia, Lesh and Mickey Hart played a series of rehearsals and shows at The Matrix in San Francisco, billed as David & Dorks. Stills joined The Dead on stage twice in 1969, on October 25 and December 12, and twice in 1983, on April 16 and 17. You can find the April 16 show here at So Many Roads.. Neil sat in with the Dead in November 3, 1991, for a moving rendition of Dylan’s Forever Young, at the tribute concert in memory of Bill Graham. Now, in honor of ¾ of CSNY playing with the Dead, we bring you the opening night from their landmark 1974 tour, which has quite a story to it. 

CSNY, which had launched with such promise at Woodstock, sputtered to a halt by the summer of 1970, derailed by a clash of egos, especially between Stills and Young. The 4 stayed in touch, however, working together in various configurations from 1971 to 1973, and finally in 1974 decided to give the 4 man group another shot. Though there was no new CSNY album, the band launched a massive US tour in July of that year. First stop was Seattle, and it was a harbinger of what was to come – total chaos. Only the immense talents of the 4 band members enabled them to overcome their continuing issues to produce some unforgettable musical moments. In Seattle, the band showed their total lack of planning, mapping out a 44 (yes – 44!) song set that they thought would last just a bit more than 3 hours. Well, at 12:35 am in Seattle, 3 ½ hours into the show, they still had 9 songs to play. They plunged ahead, finishing the show, but that decision had enormous consequences. For future shows, some songs were trimmed off the set list, while others were reshuffled in the line up, pleasing none of the 4 band members. Tensions would continue to mount throughout the tour, and when it finally ended, so did CSNY for over a ¼ century. While there would be few special appearances, such as Live Aid in 1985, CSNY would not tour again until 2000! So, this Soundboard (or excellent audience) recording of that fateful Seattle show from July 9, 1974, 41 years ago today, captures the beginning of the end of one of rock’s most legendary bands.
