In earlier posts on So Many Roads, we’ve discussed how 1978 was an up and down year for the Grateful Dead with their shows often suffering from comparisons to the monumental performances from the prior year. That said, when they were “on” in 1978, their performances rivaled any from the prior year. 1978 in Grateful Dead History

• The Dead release the album Shakedown Street, which many critics disparage as “DISCO DEAD”. 
• On September 14, 15 & 16, the band plays 3 nights at the Pyramids in Egypt. 
• The Dead make their first appearance on Saturday Night Live in November, playing Casey Jones, I Need A Miracle, and Good Lovin'. 
• The Dead close the Winterland Arena on December 31, 1978, with a monumental 3 set concert that featured the first rendition of Dark Star played in San Francisco in 1535 days. 
• In addition to the New Year’s Eve show and the Egypt run, the following concerts from 1978 have been officially released: February 3, February 5, April 24, May 10, May 11, October 21 and October 22.
