Grateful Dead - 1987-07-10 - Philadelphia, PA (SBD)

In late May 1987, the Grateful Dead went into the studio at Club Front in San Rafael, CA. Accompanying them was the legendary Bob Dylan. The Dead had long been admirers of Dylan and often covered his tunes in their shows. This was their chance to work side by side with him. Dylan and the Dead rehearsed over 50 songs during a series of sessions in late May and early June in preparation for a series of summer shows. The plan – the Dead would play as set of their own material, then serve as Dylan’s backing band for a set of his music. In the end, Dylan and the Dead would pair up for just 6 shows that summer (go here for the complete list), the first of which took place at Schaeffer Stadium in Foxboro MA on Independence Day.r />  This soundboard recording captures the 2nd Dylan/Dead pairing on July 10, 1987, 28 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back in 2 days for a 2nd installment of the Dead & Dylan in 1987!

1987 in Grateful Dead History

• The Dead release their first studio album in 7 years, entitled In The Dark. The disc was recorded in a concert setting, but with no audience, to give the tunes more of the feel they had when played live. In The Dark would go double platinum, and reach #6 on the Billboard charts.
• The album spawned the Dead’s only top 10 single, Touch Of Grey, While the tune had been performed live since 1982, its refrain of I Will Survive, never felt more appropriate and meaningful than in 1987 in the wake of Garcia’s recovery from a near fatal diabetic coma.
• The music video for Touch of Grey, featuring skeleton marionettes of each band member, went into heavy rotation on MTV and brought the band a whole new legion of fans.
• The Dead play 6 shows with Bob Dylan in the summer of 1987, playing a full show of their own material, than serving as Bob’s backing band for another set. 
• Jerry Garcia takes up residence on Broadway in October 1987, paying 18 shows in 13 days at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater, with 5 days featuring both the traditional Broadway matinee and a late show. Each show consisted of an acoustic set followed by an electric set. 
• The Dead’s New Year’s Eve concert is broadcast nationally on both Television and radio. The Neville Brothers sit in with the Dead during the 3rd set. 
• Two Grateful Dead shows from 1987 that have been officially released: July 24 and July 26 .
