Grateful Dead - 1989-07-10 - Giants Stadium, NJ (SBD Matrix) 

Here's our 2nd of 3 entries this month form the Grateful Dead in 1989, another one of those memorable shows that I was fortunate to attend.  I hopped on the free shuttle bus from the Port Authority to make the trip to Giants Stadium to see the Grateful Dead. Rain was in the forecast, but that wasn’t stopping any of us from making the trek to East Rutherford. We didn’t know it at the time, but these summer shows were the start of incredibly strong 2 year run by the Dead, featuring their best playing since Jerry Garcia’s recovery from a diabetic coma that almost cost him his life. As the first set wound down, the skies grew darker, and the rain began to fall. Perhaps in defiance of the elements, the band launched into The Music Never Stopped. During the tune, the wind picked up, making it almost impossible to stand, and the rain fell fast and furious, drenching the crowd. Yet the band “kept playing on.” In fact, the harder the wind blew, and the faster the rains came, the louder and more furious the band played. And the more we danced and "shook our bones" and cheered! They matched the elements step for step, refusing to “wheel to the storm and fly”. In the end, The Dead won the battle of wills, as the rain ended just moments before the song did, after which the band brought the set to a close with the very appropriate Don’t Ease Me In. Only afterwards did we learn that a tornado had touched down nearby! By the way, in the 2nd set, The Neville Brothers joined the Dead for the final 7 songs, making this one night to remember!
